About Harmon Condensed Biography How does author C.A. Harmon describe the importance of writing in his life? “I've found a way to speak again,” says the man who has overcome rare challenges to become not only an author, but a budding film producer at Legacy Pictures. Harmon has multiple disabilities resulting from a little-known neurological condition that was diagnosed when he was almost eight. Originally believed to be terminal, the progressively degenerative disorder has rendered him deaf, legally blind, quadriplegic and breathes on a respirator. Due to the combined effects of hearing loss and a tracheotomy, he has no voice. Since his hands are paralyzed, he can't sign, write or type. He communicates with people through Sign Language interpreters who in turn must be able to read his lips. He was a prisoner of silence until he discovered the power of imagination. His books have become the gateway between Harmon and the “normal” world: a way for him to once again have a voice. Harmon was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. When he was eight, his family moved to Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Since then, he has lived in various towns in Minnesota including Bloomington, Minneapolis, Eagan and St. Paul. Currently, Harmon resides in Burnsville, Minnesota. Book Description “It is the magic of the story that transforms this book into a true page-turner…” Fully illustrated, Treasures of the Shadows by C.A. Harmon mixes fairytale and bleak reality similar to Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, while offering up a main character as delightful as Little Orphan Annie. Set during the Great Depression, this classic tale of humanity and values is bound to charm children and adults alike. Meet Jessie Bell, a rather plain-looking orphan who has proven to be more than just a little bold. Jessie has a secret, an abandoned manor deep in the woods where she finds a magical world of wonder and awe. Unfortunately, she soon finds herself embattled against an evil business tycoon whose destructive plan just might sink America into the shadows of the lost and forgotten—along with Jessie. In an era crushed by poverty and despair, one orphan dares to dream. Severely disabled since childhood, Harmon writes from the perspective of a child who struggles to be heard, and whose spirit remains undefeated in the face of both physical adversities and inner demons.
